Michelle Heaton

Michelle Scott-Lee - born Michelle Heaton - was a member of the band Liberty X, formed off the back of the popular ITV1 show ‘Popstars’. Growing up in Newcastle, Michelle’s dream was always to be a performer. After being in the girlband ‘Sirens’ she decided to audition for ‘Popstars’ whose aim was to find the next big mixed pop group. She reached the final ten, and although she didn’t make the 5 piece winning band, Hearsay, she and the remaining 4 contestants decided to form ‘Liberty X’ and almost immediately they were signed to Virgin Records in 2001.

After two singles they scored their first number one hit with ‘Just A Little’ which was also their biggest hit worldwide. The group went on to achieve 10 consecutive UK Top 20 singles, as well as the album ‘Thinking It Over’ being a huge success; peaking at number 3 in the UK and selling over 1 million copies worldwide. Other singles from this album include ‘Holding on for You’, ‘Got To Have Your Love’, and ‘Doing It’. Their second album ‘Being Somebody’ charted in the top 20 in the UK after being released in 2003, and produced the singles ‘Ain’t Nobody’, ‘Jumpin’’ and ‘Everybody Cries’.

During a short band break Michelle participated in ITV1’s Celebrity Wrestling, released a fitness video with the other 2 Liberty X girls called ‘Toned’ and started writing her own weekly column for OK! Magazine before reforming with the group to release their third album simply entitled ‘X’ in 2005. From this album they released the single ‘Song 4 Lovers’ featuring Rev Run of Run DMC which charted at number 5. Later that year Liberty X recorded the official Children In Need single; a cover of Shalamar’s classic ‘A Night To Remember” which peaked at number 6 in the UK charts.

Michelle featured in ‘Totally Scott-Lee’ on MTV in late 2005; a reality show based around her husband’s sister – singer Lisa Scott-Lee. Also in 2005 Michelle appeared on several TV shows including Test The Nation, CD:UK and guest presenting SM:TV Live on ITV1.

2006 arrived and Liberty X were still touring the UK and Europe. Michelle began planning her wedding that year, and shortly before her big day was named as the face (and body) of the Ultimo ‘Michelle at George' lingerie range, available exclusively at Asda stores nationwide. Just after this some sad news arose: Michelle revealed that she had been diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition and she had to undergo a major operation to fit a pacemaker.

Just a month later, in October, she and Andy Scott-Lee were married in a fairytale ceremony covered by OK! Magazine and filmed by ITV2 for their ‘tell all’ documentary ‘Michelle and Andy’s Big Day’. She and Andy appeared in the celebrity couples edition of ‘The Weakest Link’ that year and she was also a celebrity reporter in Australia for GMTV.

In 2007 Liberty X announced that were officially splitting up and performed their last ever gig together in September. Michelle herself had become a household name with various TV appearances and magazine coverage to her name, including Maxim and Loaded Magazines, regular features in OK! Magazine as well as being a favourite in the women’s market. It was announced shortly after Liberty X’s last performance that Michelle was to be a judge on ‘You’re A Star’ – Ireland’s version of ‘The X Factor’ and although auditions have taken place in 2007, the series will be airing in 2008 on RTE. Michelle took on her first ever pantomime role in 2007; starring alongside her husband Andy in ‘Cinderella’ in Sunderland, with Michelle in the title role and Andy as Prince Charming.

2008 saw Michelle take part in the ITV1 documentary ‘The Truth About Binge Drinking’ where she revealed to the nation the dangers and effects of binge drinking. After this she continued her role as a judge on ‘You’re A Star’ in Ireland, and is now weighing up her options for the rest of 2008 with lots of exciting opportunities in the pipeline.
